History of Western Heights Baptist Church
WHBC actually began in June 1960 with weekly prayer meetings that were held in private homes of the Dinwiddie Gardens area. Those meetings were organized and lead by Reverend Charles Sneed, a church planter for the Southern Baptist Convention, who was employed at the Richmond Army Depot in Bellwood, VA.
In 1961 this group of Baptist believers purchased a home in Mount Pleasant subdivision in Dinwiddie County and formed Western Heights Baptist Chapel. The Petersburg Baptist Association soon sponsored the chapel and purchased seven acres of land on Cox Road.
On July 7th, 1963, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the present location. A two- story building consisting of a sanctuary with baptistery, eight classrooms, and a pastor’s study were constructed on this site.
A new educational wing and fellowship hall were added in 1968. A new sanctuary was added in May, 1999. The old sanctuary was converted to education space, primarily for children.
