In Chapter 10, Paul reverts back to the conversation of his reputation and the falsehoods that have been spread about him in the Corinthian church. In a pastoral, firm, and Christ-like way, Paul will lay out for the Corinthians why he is often meek and gentle, but sometimes bold, and will ultimately put forth a goal for the church to employ Christ-like spiritual warfare on lies, dissension, and wolves in the church, for the glory of Christ and the health of the local church!
- Pauls appeals are in the spirit of Christs meekness and gentleness (10:1-2)
- Though Christ was sometimes very gentle and sometimes not, it was not a contradiction or hypocrisy on his part.
- Christs rebuke of the adulterous woman vs. the Pharisees
- There is a time for boldness, gentleness, and everything in between
- Spiritual Warfare uses the Christ-exalting spiritual weapons (10:3-4)
- Pauls issue isnt with physical weapons, but with fleshly weapons
- Ephesians 6 gives us a picture of our spiritual weapons (from Matthew Henry)
- Instead of the belt of truth, they fought with manipulation.
- Instead of the breastplate of righteousness, they fought with the image of success.
- Instead of the shoes of the gospel, they fought with smooth words.
- Instead of the shield of faith, they fought with the perception of power.
- Instead of the helmet of salvation, they fought with lording over authority.
- Instead of the sword of the Spirit, they fought with human schemes and programs.
- Conflict and arguments in the church should always have a positive spiritual purpose (10:5-6)
- They should aim at lies and dangers, not people
- They should champion truth
- They should hold up Christ as the standard
- Ultimately, the honor of Christ and the health of the Church are the purpose and goal!
